Colonel Marcus M. Spiegel
Colonel Marcus M. Spiegel was a German-Jewish immigrant, who became one of the highest ranking Jewish officers in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was mortally wounded during the Red River Campaign and was buried by his fellow soldiers in an unmarked grave, on the bank of the Red River near Snaggy Point, Louisiana on May 4, 1864. His younger brother Joseph, founded the Spiegel Catalogue Company.

Colonel Spiegel was one of the highest ranking Jewish officers in the Civil War. He served in the 67th and 120th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. This heroic soldier was mortally wounded and died on May 4, 1864 during the Red River Campaign. He was buried by his fellow soldiers at Captain Wilson’s Plantation in an unmarked grave on the bank of the Red River near Snaggy Point, Louisiana. His brother Joseph founded the Spiegel Catalog Company and his niece Hannah G. Solomon was the founder of the National Council of Jewish Women.
