Colonel Spiegel was one of the highest ranking Jewish officers in the Civil War. He served in the 67th and 120th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. This heroic soldier was mortally wounded and died on May 4, 1864 during the Red River Campaign. He was buried by his fellow soldiers at Captain Wilson’s Plantation in an unmarked grave on the bank of the Red River near Snaggy Point, Louisiana. His brother Joseph founded the Spiegel Catalog Company and his niece Hannah G. Solomon was the founder of the National Council of Jewish Women.
